Sad to report that I’ve pushed out Shasta again…to August. Not sure if the snow conditions will be alright, but I’ll just have to cross my fingers. There’s simply no way with my whiplash recovery to safely go next weekend.
This past Wednesday I practiced on Mt. Tam with a 10 lb pack, and was pretty sore by the end of the day. Then, the next day I had a massive headache & sinus ache. My guess is the weight of the pack pulled my neck muscles around enough to change around my skull plates. I’m sure an MD would complete say I’m crazy, but this seems to be my experience. There’s a lot MDs don’t know. Just ask my dead brother…
But, let’s not go there. Anyways, the point is I’m weak. So, now I’m thinking about how to build up the strength in my neck & shoulders to prepare for carrying a pack. Do any of you, dear readers, have isometric & gentle strength building exercises that you know of for neck & shoulders? There are a few yoga poses I will try, but would like to learn more.
Meanwhile, I’ll continue on with prepping, interviews, running, and hikes with no pack. It’s all I can do right now.
Healing this is just excruitiating. But, if my brother can bounce back from two ACL surgeries and still ride road bikes like the wind, then I can make it past this head & neck hiccup. That’s all it is, at least I keep telling myself this. Just a hiccup.
Wish me luck!
